Though this be madness, yet there is method in it - This blog was started to record my two years at Indian Institute of Management - Kozhikode (IIMK) and now, life beyond IIMK. Chaos, Irrationality and finally the apparent patterns beyond IIM?

The contents of this blog are my reflections over ppl, things and other general stuff. In no light is it meant to deprecate anyone. The contents of this blog do not represent the views of my employer or anyone else. On the flip side, nothing but the truth will be posted here, though sometimes in a convoluted manner. An open and an honest feedback would be appreciated, in case the posts are found to be misrepresentative or malignful.

Since I am back after a long gap, I shall write a lot - crib, bitch, gossip, give my 2 cent worth opinions and waste time (mine for sure and yours if you are going to read all this :D).

About this Entry
As I sit staring at my computer with a slightly dazed look trying to cook up a name for this post, I was actually trying to figure out what on earth I wanted to write! I once came across Shashi Tharoor comment in an interview that writing is purgatory - now I know what it feels like ;). So maybe, after I write, this post would be like the quintessential Indian thali - at the end, you know that you have eaten a lot - the tummy hanging down as a proof to Newton's theory, testing the elasticity of your belt nay, the strength of the buckle ;) - with the 'darn, what did I eat to feel so heavy?!' line flashing in front of your eyes.

Aug. 26th, 2007 @ 03:05 pm Crisis of the 'Left'
About this Entry
"Wait till your mom gets to know about this!" , yelled my teacher when she discovered that I was back to writing with my left hand. This sentence haunts me to this day as it was a result of some astute treachery hatched by my mom and Mrs. Usha (my class techer in I A, LFHS) that I had to start writing with my right hand. ''Writing with the left hand is not good for your future', 'left handedness is an evil sign', blah blah blah ad infinitum. But thankfully otherwise, I havent turned myself into a right handed fella. Is it that lefties are just normal people who are a minority in a right majority? And what is common between our Left friends who are trying to scuttle the nuke deal and lefties?! (Coincidentally, the political Left and left handers are a minority :D).

About this Entry
Its that time of the year when new freaks from campuses all over the country join work places and old freaks become especially regular and punctual at the office, with an eye on the bonuses and the ensuing jumping around. A good old friend of mine (Bops the buster who always freerided but managed to give the profs a freaking lot of gyaan in the crunch times during presentations!!!) used to remark in his affably caustic way - "Its BMW time man!!" whenever the weather turned cloudy and was about to pour, back @ K. BMW incidentally meant Baby Making Weather!!!! Its BMW indeed in Mumbai these days with the monsoon picking up...and I cant help but smile when I look at the clouds and recollect Bops' BMW :D. but is it only BMW time or is it the See Wee time? I Have been seeing quite a few acquaintances preparing their See Wees to catalyze their work (and pockets also!!!). So everyone these days know how to make a CV...but how about some innovative ways to market your See Wees?

Oct. 1st, 2006 @ 06:46 pm The Ideal Weekend and other musings
About this Entry
Its that time of the week when everyone thinks of having a good time. For some lucky ones, the good times begin on friday evenings, for some unlucky ones, unless you decide to have a good time, you are saddled with work. So after the full week, I was left wondering what to do - the last 3 weekends whizzed past and i was busy with excel sheets and reports. And then came a weekend....that was the last weekend, when I decided to take things into hands and pockets :D. Leaving work place at 4 PM, I was in the mood for a long haul.

About this Entry
Living alone has its own charm and its own set of pains too. There are many a time when you might just not feel like going back home coz no one really cares! But thats no excuse to loaf around on the streets, lest I be miscnstrued :D. But the best part of living alone is the grub - you dont have to endure the same rice, curry, sambar menu day in and day out with minor variations. You name it - you ea t it. Thai, Mexican, Italian, Lebanese and of course, desi. 2 months in mumbai and I have already checked out a host of grub joints in South Mumbai. Tips and suggestions are welcome though.

About this Entry
Setting up a new house can be difficult - you have to wade through the mines laid by the brokers, have a look around the locality and the complex and of course, NEVER pay money in advance to anyone...atleast, in Mumbai. But after being through all this, when I felt that the worst was over, little did I realize that it was just the beginning. Weekend shopping experiences proved a nightmare, Dominos has been my only defe3nce against nocturnal starvation and worst of all, the rains in this god forsaken city.

About this Entry
I have been wanting to do this for the last one month - write, write and write. But various tasks, search for a new house, getting used to uncivilized societies (till now, I Was under the delusion that Bombay is civilized), shifting, shopping, etc have kept me busy. Writing this is going to prove a purgatory experience!

About this Entry
For any serious observer, after films and fashion, the advertising community/profession is the most hyped. With prolific tales of India becoming a giant, monster, etc. (Courtesy McK and their consulting likes), it is but natural that ads start pelleting the viewer on TV day in and day out. Some can be funny, some try to be funny and some are seriously trashworthy.

About this Entry
1.30 AM, 28th. March 2006...as I sit in my room listening to Jim Morrison's American Prayer and attempt to pen down my thoughts, the first thing that struck me was - its time to change the title of this blog. This blog was started nearly 2 years back - right in the first term at IIMK and has from then on served as my alter ego. Life at IIMK was a ball and real life or rather, life beyond K struck the moment I realized that I had to search - yes SEARCH for an accomodation in Mumbai and life isnt the same as it was 2 years back when I just called up Karan and was told to take the keys to D-6 from the security. 2 years of education, fun and toils - all came to a end on a grand evening when I was conferred the PGDM. People keep talking of takeaways from sessions/courses/education. My takeaways from IIMK - a few general principles in acads, lots of fundas for zindagi, a huge network and a tribute to the enchanting beauty of Kerala. If there were a place more beautiful that Kerala in India, I would.........rather visit it :D. But forever, the Hope Tree (on the way to the admin block) as I call it, in IIMK shall be the best spot where I sat for hours at length gazing at the valleys.

About this Entry
5.30 AM was generally the time I went to sleep...but today, I made an earnest effort to wake up at that time. 6 AM, I was walking all over the campus trying to get a feel of the place and watched the sun's rays touch down on K - just as I had done almost 2 years back when I first came here. Back then, it was a part of an attempt to get a feel of the place - today also, it was an effort to feel the place, to hug the place and stash it away in my memory for lifetime. Everything - everything including the flowers, the buildings, classrooms, audi, walkways and the balconies evoked zillions of memories. Memories of sitting for countless ppts, bullshitting away to glory through global presentations, bitching at NC, nite outs, crunch times, liesure times....phew! Two awesome years have almost come to an end..before I realized, it is all over as I complete my stay at IIMK and get set to make a life for myself. Placements happened, Parties happened, trip to backwaters happened, yearbook happened - everything happened except for the packing. As i write this, I am suddenly overcome by the feeling that I am supposed to leave today and I havent even started the packing! I simply dont have the heart to pack up and say bbye to D 23, bbye to D Hsotel, bbye to all my friends and teh campus. But all good things come to an end and so has my stay at K. It ended with the best demonstration of the power of an MBA from IIMK - a guy like me with marketing and finance (zilch as far as systems knowledge goes!) for majors being recruited by IBM for technology and process consulting! 'Why should we recruit you??!'.....'Well, fart fart fart....I also bring a sound knowledge of the marketing and finance functions and I believe technology is only an enabler to make things simpler and easier. Hence, it can be learnt at any point in time - something that is also in sync with my continuous learning philosophy!' The recruiter fell flat :P. Two more offers came and finally, I am headed to SBI Capital Markets to make a career for myself in Investment Banking. I dare not continue for else, I will have to postpone the packing to some other time. So here's RC, wishing fellow graduating batchmates all the very best! Three cheers to IIMK!!!

About this Entry
I write this as I reek of a strange smell that is an outcome of being doused with tomato sauce, smeared with vanilla icecream, liquid handwash poured over my head and me getting bumped and kicked till my arse ached. So read on...for I have written this very quickly before I am off for a long bath...a really long one, at 2 30 AM :D.

About this Entry
A few random thoughts at this unearthly hour - a consequence of preparing presentations and reports day in and day out. It is that crunch time of the term when everything - assignments, projects, powerpoint presentations and worst of all - exams are breathing down your neck.

1. What if there was no application called a spreadsheet and no excel sheets? Life would have been so simple - atleast for those who are mauled day in and day out into working with cells, formulae and what not! And oh yeah, the macros for option pricing and all...where would they be huh? The mere thought is wickedly seductive :D.

2. What if there was no bloody power point!! Aaah...that would have been the best bliss for an MBA student and hordes of managers who roll up their sleeves every night to prepare slide after slide of nonsense and then crow them out before a bigger fool the next day.

To borrow from a well known and a cool song of IITK,

'kahi kaha yeh hai kya ho raha
dil ko nahin hain chain yahaan
dil ka sukoon aur chain gaya
ek hulchul din......
aise hi chalta apna jeevan'

A chance encounter with a fellow zombie when I go to pee consoles me. A run into a fellow crusader near the tea vending machine leads to that cheeky 'I thought you were fast asleep' comment :P. A bird's eye view of the humanity bursting at seams only to make ends meet a lil more easily makes one think of all this mad rush as futile and temporal. But alas! there is the draw of alcohol, the cute smile of a female that brightens up the soul like magic and the unbeatable high that one gets on achieving something - these have made man tick for ages and will continue to do so.....as i think so, I open the folder called Vids on my comp for a change.

In the midst of all these, watching Ash in ishq kameena and nisha kothari in James proves to be a welcome break. Aaah...what a relief a cute face and a lisome babe can bring to a man! Its all about the gender honey!! Now its back to drudgery again! The report churning machine is on!

About this Entry
'Are you struggling with words to write? Are you so busy that you cant write for even 15 minutes? Have you given up on blogging?..yada yada yada...' were some of the questions that I found myself and others asking me. With an emphatic NO to each of those questions, I am back at it again - like the rising phoenix. Too many things had kept me busy for days and nights at large and in the frantic activity, I even forgot my blog's first birthday!
